Peace, Justice and Missions
Current Outreach Opportunities
  • MORE2 (The Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity) is a Kansas City organization of faith communities that definitely shares our concerns for equity, justice, and peace. By joining our voices with those of many other faith communities in Kansas City, we are able to make our concerns felt in the halls of local and regional government. Crossroads Church joined forces with MORE2 in 2007 and we are lending our passion to this process.

  • Third World Sewing Partnership - This partnership explores ways to furnish sewing machines to third world countries as a means of providing income to underprivileged women and their families. Crossroads Church has an active involvement with San Lucas, Guatemala and plans to raise $5000 for purchasing additional sewing machines for the women of San Lucas this year. (See adult Guatemala Mission Trip below.)

  • Youth Mission Trips

  • Youth mission trips are scheduled every summer to economically depressed areas of the country. Young people are invited to participate if they have completed 6th grade and the eligible age extends through high school. See information below about past trips taken and the mission organizations sponsoring the trips.

  • The youth at Crossroads Church have participated in several mission opportunities sponsored by Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Program). Mountain T.O.P. is an organization dedicated to rural life ministry on the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee in helping to meet the physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs of the people living in the Appalachian Mountain.

  • Crossroad Church has chosen mission opportunities offered by Group Workcamps, an all-inclusive, interdenominational and international short- term youth mission trip organization. Crossroad youth have visited two Native American reservations, one in Wyoming and one in South Dakota, to perform home repair and community service projects. During the summer of 2008 they will travel to West Virginia to work on projects for local residents coordinated by Group Workcamps.

Adult Mission Trips to Guatemala
  • Groups of Crossroads people have been on five mission trips to San Lucas, Guatemala since 1998. Projects to remodel two buildings and install 24 sewing machines have been accomplished. The machines are used by local women to sew for their families and make items to be sold in the city market. Another adult mission trip is planned during 2008 that will include the installation of ten additional sewing machines.

Other Outreach Activities
  • Just Faith (ends early 2008) - A group of about a dozen participants is following a 30-week curriculum provided by JustFaith Ministries. The process utilizes books, videos, lecture, discussion, prayer, retreats and hands-on experiences (called Border Crossings.) The goal is to help individuals experience conversion—a change of heart—integrating their personal spirituality with social commitment. Being a part of the JustFaith group also provides the opportunity of becoming a community based on the shared journey with other participants.

  • Heifer International - Collections have been taken at Crossroads Church during Advent to support this group's mission to end hunger and poverty by providing farm animals and agricultural items to underprivileged people all over the world. Heifer International also provides education to recipients regarding sound agricultural techniques and animal management.

  • Harvesters - A group from Crossroads Church assists Harvesters Community Food Network during a workday once a year to organize food donations in the Harvesters warehouse and fill orders for distribution.

  • Neighborhood Back to School Day – This event was held in the church parking lot while members of the Crossroads Church band played music and hot dogs were grilled and served. School supplies were distributed to neighborhood children. Photos

  • Wayne Street Neighborhood Partnership – This partnership was formed to assist residents on one intercity block with home repairs and yard cleanup and landscaping.Photos

  • The articles below were written by Bob Thatch, a Crossroad Church member, about The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly the School of the Americas). The "Institute" is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia. Bob has attended several demonstrations opposing the former School of the Americas and shares his observations and passion in his articles.
