On Sunday morning, May 22, a day later marked by a devastating tornado in Joplin, Missouri, I sat in the University of Kansas football stadium watching KU’s Commencement exercises. I was there to share the joy of my wife Kathy’s official graduation with a PhD from KU! As I sat and waiting for the graduates to walk down the hill and enter the stadium, I wrote this poem:
Spring damp under sunny
skies
Breeze and clouds forecast
storm
Conclusion and
commencement
Omega and
alpha
A kind of death, a kind of
birth
And life is
renewed
The future as cloudy as the
afternoon sky's potential
The work of school that always
seemed like life
Until you are born
again
Until you must breathe and eat on
your own
Many storms
wait
And all the life there is
