Enotes How to be a better learner |
Pretty much every thing you read about how to live
longer and more fully includes the idea that it’s important to be a life-long
learner. It’s the way to keep your mind sharper and increase the joy in your
life. Since both of these benefits are very appealing, I want to keep learning
and growing throughout my life.
So, what is the best way you can think of to
learn?
What do all the experts tell
you?
The best way to learn much about anything is to teach
it! Stephen Covey, in his Seven Habits of
Highly Effective People, tells us that as soon as we learn some new
skill or idea, teach it to someone else. We retain so much more of what we
learn when we teach it to someone else.
So, I’ve been thinking (always dangerous!) that churches
have a great resource to help people become better life-long learners. There is
something we call Sunday School that offers opportunities for people to teach –
and when you teach, you learn much more effectively.
Therefore, I am pleased to offer this limited
opportunity to teach (or assist or be a shepherd) in Sunday School starting this
fall. Think of how much you will learn about the Bible and the journey of faith
as you teach children, youth, or adults! For the congregation I serve as
pastor, Crossroads
Church, there will be a
very special event – The GATHERING 2 (part 1 was last year) on Saturday, August
23 (see the announcement above). Let me know if you’re interested.
If your tastes run more to working with adults, you can
let me know that as well. The Life Journeys class I usually teach is going to
do a unit on Faith and Election Year
Issues. If you have an election year issue you’d like us to discuss
or if you’d like to help lead a discussion of any of these issues, you can
contact me by replying to this e-mail, by calling the Crossroads Church office (816) 931-8420 or by
checking out my blog online at
crossroadschurchkc.org. You’ll probably want to wait until Thursday to read and
respond to the blog. I wish you the very best in being a life-long
learner!
Thanks for continuing to bless me on the journey.
