I've written
before about the value of doing musical theater ministry in the context of
church and synagogue. It creates a powerful sense of community across
generational and other lines so that relationships of mentoring and support
happen. It provides a great vehicle of invitation and hospitality for many
people who otherwise might never enter a place of worship. And it enables
congregations to tell important stories in dynamic
ways.
The
Crossroads Theatre Company is getting ready to present the Broadway musical
Into the Woods
by Stephen Sondheim. Performances are at Crossroads Church - April 9,10,11, 16,17, and 18.
This is a wonderfully-written show with a message that speaks to people of faith
in terms of acting with courage on the journey. Each of us is on a journey to
discern and live our calling with a goal of helping to transform the world
according to our shared values of doing justice, making peace, and overcoming
fear with love.
Into the
Woods
includes some favorite fairy tale characters like Cinderella, Little Red Riding
Hood, Jack with his Beanstalk, two charming princes, and others. Each one has a
wish, a dream, but to make that dream come true requires that they go
into the
woods, to take an intentional journey. Jack goes
into the woods to sell a milk-less cow for money to buy the food he and his
mother need desperately to survive. He ends up with magic beans and then finds
riches beyond imagination in the land of the giants. Cinderella goes into the
woods wishing to attend a royal ball, but a prince falls for her and she becomes
a princess giving royal festivals of her own. On and on it goes and, of course,
they all discover later that there is a steep price to be paid for wishes
granted and dreams realized.
Into the
Woods
is a musical metaphor for the journey we must take to become who and what we
want to be.
Into the
woods and through the fear
You have to
take the journey (Sondheim, Into the
Woods)
People of
faith share this call to action: to press forward, step up, and
go into the
woods to make our dreams-God's dream of Shalom--come
true. We need to change the world by engaging as full partners with God's Spirit
who is already at work around us. We need to step up to full partnership with
other people and become a community of the Spirit-to work for justice, equity
and peace by putting power in our prayers and feet to our faith.
Everyone has
a dream. Our dreams are God's investment in us. Somewhere inside each of us is a
dream that is either growing or dying. We are alive in order to translate our
dreams into tangible reality. We live in communities of faith to support, and
even sometimes to agitate, each other for the realizing of our dreams. There is
a sacred reality at the core of life that challenges us to step up, press
forward, and act with courage to help shape a world of peace, inclusion, and
compassion-a world the Bible calls The Kingdom of
Heaven.
