Enotes Theater as Ministry |
The congregation I serve as pastor,
Crossroads Church in Kansas City, has a theater company as part of
its ministry offering. The Crossroads Theatre Company is preparing to present
the musical Big
River and, if you're in the
area, I hope you will plan to come. You can check out the Ad
below.
There are many good reasons for
doing Broadway musicals as ministry in the church. It has many benefits for a
congregation including: providing visibility in the community and helping to
build a sense of community within the congregation and a sense of connectedness
to the larger community. Musicals provide opportunities for congregational
members and community residents to develop their artistic gifts within a loving
and supportive environment. They provide a powerful way for the congregation to
express its own reason for being-praising God and building community through the
arts, promoting reconciliation, peace, and justice throughout congregational
life, and enabling individuals to find a voice and develop their own sense of
giftedness and calling for ministry.
I can think of one more
compelling reason to do musicals as ministry-joy. There is a tremendous sense of
joy in taking on a project like this. You work hard at learning the music, the
lines, the blocking, and the choreography. You work hard at marketing the
production and getting people to come. You work hard at transforming the
sanctuary into a theater and at creating costumes, sets, and a whole new world
of imagination. Joy comes as a group of people meet the challenge and succeed.
Joy comes in celebrating that success and in being celebrated for your part. Joy
comes in telling a powerful story well and changing people's lives and
attitudes. My prayer for each of you is to find opportunities both to know some
of life's challenges and the joy of meeting them.
Thanks for continuing to bless me as
we journey together.
