From the Intentional Interim Pastor

You have some homework for this coming Sunday, May 18th.

The appointed lectionary epistle text for Sunday is I Peter 2:2-10. And it will serve as the foundation for my sermon. I want you to familiarize yourself with it. It is a significant passage outlining the identity of any and all churches. So, first … locate your Bible, then dust it off, then turn to the text (it is in the New Testament right after James and before II Peter) and read it. Use lectio divina, three out loud readings of it in which you linger over a word, phrase or concept. Why was it meaningful to you? What in your life right now makes that word/phrase/concept memorable? Why is it an important text in the life of Crossroads right now? Read different translations, too.

After the devotional reading of it, try a more academic approach. Ask historical-critical questions which probe such things as: author, context, situation, possible meanings, etc. Dig into it. Consult some books, commentaries, or reputable on-line services. Which interpretation do you favor, and why? And again, ask yourself, “Why is this text important for us at Crossroads right now and in the future?”

And lastly, pray the scripture (it’s only 8 verses) repeatedly. Let it seep into your bones. Chant it. Pray that, come Sunday, it might sink deeper into your spirit, and the very marrow of this great church. It’s an important time in the life of your church. I ask that you come prepared to worship, and yes, do a little Bible study (it won’t hurt you, I promise!) beforehand.

Remember, it’s I Peter 2:2-10. And, yes, there’s a pop quiz …

With love and hope,

Marcus

Board Game Night

Bible Study Delayed until May 21st

A couple of weeks ago, eight persons gathered at Terri Oberle’s house for Bible study on Galatians. We read together the first chapter and shared knowledge, insights, and personal stories of application. We are loosely following the inductive process, asking these three questions:  What does it say; what does it mean; and what does it mean to me? It was a rich time of being with each other in the presence of God mediated through the scripture. All are welcome to join us for Galatians 2, Wednesday, May 21, 7:00pm at 801 E 77th Street, KCMO 64131. We meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month and will resume our schedule by meeting on the 28th.

Renovaré Coming in June

The five Sundays in June will offer studies in classic spiritual works.  It will be a time of exploration and discussion of these rich writings.  Readings will be drawn from Devotional Classics, edited by Richard J. Foster and  James Bryan Smith.  You may want to borrow or purchase a copy.  Please respond on Church Updates if you wish to attend.

Old Stuff to Help Young Folks

A youth fundraising rummage sale will be happening in late May or early June.  Items such as furniture and household items are preferred but, of course, we will accept all donations.  This will go toward expenses for the July Youth Mission Trip.  Thank you for your donations.

MORE2 Banquet on Thursday, June 12

An evening at the Marriott Muehlebach Hotel dining with peace and justice folks from around Kansas City, listening to a powerful speaker from North Carolina, and supporting the work of MORE2 can be pretty engaging.  Several Crossroads members will be sharing a table.  You are encouraged to join them.  This is grassroots activism at its best.  For more information, visit www.MORE2.org.
